Multi-performance shirt with cooling and warning function and UV-protection

Project No. FF-FP 0506

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

Workers who are exposed to climatic conditions outdoors are increasingly suffering from extreme weather conditions. As part of the project, a modular, multifunctional shirt is to be created that takes into account the requirements of the different work areas of the defined target groups by adding functionalities. The aim of the project is to develop innovative, cooling, long-sleeved outerwear that protects outdoor workers from overheating and UV exposure. By developing a version with an additional integrated warning function, the aim is to ensure that employees are also protected in poor visibility conditions. The development should be usable for both men and women. The combination of cooling and UV protection as well as a warning function in one garment is a major challenge in terms of the selection of suitable materials, processes and structures, as there is a risk of mutual interference. Nevertheless, combining these properties in just one garment will set new standards in the field of textile safety and comfort.

Activities/Methods:

In preparation for the project task, a specification of the requirements for protective clothing for the target groups must be drawn up as part of an interdisciplinary collaboration with representatives of the UVT. Furthermore, all available technologies, products and textile functionalisation principles are to be explored in order to be able to make a selection suitable for achieving the project objectives in comparison with the requirements. Three different approaches are being considered for the development of the textile surface/s with integrated cooling, UV protection and warning function: the use of special yarns, surface parameterisation and surface finishing. Once the cooling function and UV protection meet the requested requirements, a surface including a warning function is developed according to the modular principle. The innovative character of the planned development lies in the selection and combination of materials and functionalisations, taking into account their mutual relationships, as well as in the development of structures and cuts for transfer into garments that can be produced economically and accepted by the relevant target group.
