Development of preemptive methods towards increased work safety at ground conveyors through fusion and analysis of 2D and 3D image sensor data

The project aims at both researching general methods to improve work safety at motor-powered ground conveyors and specifically applying 2D and 3D image processing methods in a demonstrator system to prove this method effective in increasing work safety in such an environment. The combination of 2D and 3D image processing technologies allows to profit from the individual strengths of each technology. The developed demonstrator can serve as a basis to engineer a system for ground conveyors to notify the driver of potential hazards, which then could be integrated and retrofitted into ground conveyors independent of the manufacturer. Furthermore methods to convert this system into a certified safety system are investigated on a conceptual level. To that end the functional chains are analyzed to identify weak links and redundancies in the system and describe them in a safety concept.


At first hazardous situations for humans in and surrounding ground conveyors are analyzed towards identifying assisting functions, which can help reduce the danger arising from the most important of those hazards. After that a concept for a system is developed, which implements one of the identified functions. To that end both the requirements and test cases for evaluation purposes are established. Simulated sensor data plays an important role in choosing, developing and evaluating algorithms throughout the entire design process of the demonstrator. The final system validation is additionally conducted in real-world test cases.
