In 2021, the accident insurance institutions responsible for the industrial and public sectors paid compensation amounting to 10.720 billion euro following insurance claims. These payments encompassed services, cash payments and payments in kind to victims of accidents and occupational disease and to surviving dependants.
4.736 billion euro were paid for curative treatment and for medical, occupational and social rehabilitation measures. This figure was 1.5 % higher than in the previous year. Further 5.983 billion euro (- 0.7 %) were paid in the form of pensions, lump-sum benefits, allowances and similar expenditure.

In the area of pupil accident insurance, compensation payments totaling a further 470 million euro were made in 2021 (- 8.1 %). Of this, 333 million euro were accounted for by curative treatment and rehabilitation measures and 137 million euro by pensions and similar payments.
