Epidemiological intervention study: Injury incidence reduction in selected sectors (II) – detailed evaluations

Aims:

In the preceding model project (0072, "Epidemiological intervention study: Injury incidence reduction in selected sectors (I)"), circumstantial and behavioural prevention measures such as consultation and training courses were performed in a number of companies in the glass and ceramics and metals industries. The objective was for the most effective measures to be identified, together with the underlying conditions in companies, and for the accident rate to be reduced. The first analysis had already revealed a significant reduction in the accident rate as a result of the measure. Continuation in sub-project II had the purpose of testing the sustainability and of attempting to record technical and work organizational variables. The measures were presented and conclusions formulated for prevention concepts for sectors exhibiting a high accident rate.

Activities/Methods:

The sustainable effect of the intervention measure was evaluated in detail against the accident rates of a reference group. The significance of mental stresses, behaviour of superiors, risk assessments and technical changes was analysed in consideration of a range of work structures.

Results:

Before-and-after comparisons revealed no significant changes in mental stresses, superiors' behaviour or observations of workers' behaviour. This indicates that the effect of the intervention measure is independent of these factors.

Altogether, the effect of the intervention measure was shown to be sustainable for a maximum of five years. In order to assure longer-term sustainability, the intervention measure should be repeated at intervals of three to four years, in consideration of changes in the accident rate.
