Genotoxic potential of quartz dusts

Project No. FFFF 0216

Status:

completed 04/2003

Activities/Methods:

Animal experiment (rat, intratracheal application) and in-vitro-test (rat lung epithelia cells).

Results:

Quartz effects may be not directly genotoxic and there could be a no-adverse effect level for cancerogenity. Biological activity of quartz in mixed dusts from workplaces can be completely different from pure quartz.

Type of hazard:

dangerous substances

Catchwords:

Description, key words:

Biological activity of quartz in dusts from workplaces depends from work/workplace - specific parameters, such as crystalline silica content, surface properties of dust particles, other minerals. Assessment of quantity and classification of toxicological potential of quartz dust compounds versus pure quartz
