Noise-reduced technologies and working processes - metal working

Project No. BIA 4039

Status:

completed 09/1989

Aims:

There are many noise-reduced technologies and working processes - stemming from publicly funded or industrial research activities - which represent an important contribution to the reduction of noise exposure at the workplace. The project was aimed to establish an inventory of noise-reduced technologies and working processes on the basis of a literature research. Metal working activities playing a central role in the development of noise-induced hearing impairment, these workplaces were first analysed. The project was initiated by the institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the metalworking industry in northern Germany and the institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the mechanical engineering and metalworking industry.

Activities/Methods:

Tables were prepared to give a structured overview not only of the findings in the field of noise abatement research, but also of guidelines, recommendations and practical information.

Results:

For the most important manufacturing processes used in the metal working industry the following information is provided: noise causes, corrective measures, alternative processes, expected noise abatement, advantages and shortcomings of the process, literature reference. This basic information can be extended by consulting the literature sources referred to such as to provide help in concrete individual cases.
