Ensuring the individual effectiveness of hearing protection as a contribution to the inclusion of people with hearing loss

Project No. FF-FP 0410

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

Hearing protection for persons with hearing loss will be adapted to the individual hearing capacity. Using hearing protectors with sufficient sound attenuation in real-world use, good signal audibility and speech perception will enable persons with hearing loss to keep their job.
Fitting checks for custom moulded hearing protectors and determination of the individual sound attenuation of earplugs have the target to preserve the hearing ability. The use of hearing aids while working in noise areas (hearing protection zones) shall be established on a broad basis of approved devices.

Activities/Methods:

  • Review of the used derating values for selection of hearing protectors by a survey and a clarification of the limits of use.
  • Clarification of the acoustic behaviour of level dependent hearing protectors and collection of experiences of users.
  • Determination of the individual sound attenuation of hearing protectors for persons with hearing loss by repeated audiometric measurements in laboratory and practice.
  • Clarification of usability of different hearing aids in noise areas and coordination with German Institute of Hearing Aids (DHI) and Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) regarding further developments of the type approval procedure.
