The basis of the test on abrasive agents is the regulation BGR 500 "Betreiben von Arbeitsmitteln" ["Operating of work equipment", in German only], from April 2008. Maximum content levels for hazardous substances in abrasive agents are set down in Part 2, Chapter 2.24 (previously BGV D26), Paragraph 3.2 of this regulation. Thus, the sum of the proportions of antimony, lead, cadmium, tin, arsenic, beryllium, cobalt, nickel, and their compounds and chromates may not exceed 2 percent by mass. Still, the sum of the proportions of arsenic, beryllium, cobalt, nickel, and their compounds and chromates may not exceed 0.2 percent by mass, and the proportions of beryllium, cobalt, cadmium, and their compounds and chromates may not individually exceed more than 0.1 percent by mass. The maximum proportion of silicogenous components (quartz, cristobalite, tridymite) is set at 2 percent by mass.

The analytic analysis of the components is done at IFA using ICP mass spectrometry, photometry, and x-ray diffractometry (see Figure). The test requires at least 500 grams of the abrasive agent from current production. Additional documentation on the material and chemical composition of the abrasive agent is also helpful.

The following types of abrasive agents have been studied by IFA over the last few years: slag (fired boiler slag, metal slag, blast furnace slag, boiler slag), garnet sand, silicon carbide, corundum (normal, fine, electro-corundum), corundum + silicon carbide, corundum + mullite, steel grit, cast steel, chilled cast iron, glass (glass bead, ground window glass), glass and mineral components, plastic granulates, ceramic granulates, basalt sand, bauxite, sodium hydrogen carbonate, melted casting of zircon oxide base, regenerates of different abrasive agents.
