The method of sampling and analysis currently used for carcinogenic nitrosamine in the air is not appropriate according to actual knowledge when the presence of semi-volatile nitrosamines cannot definitely be excluded, as this tends to lead to nitrosation reactions on the sample carrier and thus falsify the results. No TRK value has yet been established for semi-volatile nitrosamines as there is no suitable method of detection. Goal: The development of a new system of sampling and analysis with universal application for volatile and semi-volatile nitrosamines, which is more safe to artefacts and ensures the necessary accuracy and detection limits as well as adequate recovery rates and reproducibility; drawing up a procedural regulation.
Testing and validation of annular denuder systems; gas- chromatographic analysis; use on gas and aerosol type test mixtures with doses of impurities followed by tests at the work place; statistical validation
With a coupled denuder system spatially separate, artefact-free sample taking and analysis of amines and nitrosamines is possible simultaneously. With 80 % separation efficiency in the denuder a detection limit of 0.5 µg/m³ is attained for NMA with direct analysis of denuder-eluates, which would be adequate for control of a Threshold Limit Value of 3.5 µm/m³. A measuring regulation was formulated for the detection of semi-volatile reactive nitrosamine in the air at the work place.
