Chemical protective gloves

Aims:

Testing the barrier properties of chemical protective gloves in accordance with EN 374-3 (permeation) does not represent the conditions in service to a sufficient extent. Elevated temperature (skin), repeated/occasional short-term exposure and mechanical stretching (hand moving) have to be considered as well as real solvent mixtures instead of pure chemicals.

Activities/Methods:

A test procedure was developed for testing permeation at 35 °C, 20 % length stretching and short-term exposure. The procedure was applied to five products containing volatile organic solvants and 19 different gloves. Results were compared with EN 374-3.

Results:

The new test procedure allows a more specific selection of the suitable glove and better estimation of real protection time but it is more difficult than EN 374-3. The decision scheme for selection of suitable gloves based on information from material databases may reduce the effort.
