Separation of cooling lubricant emissions at machine tools, Projekt part WZL: investigations of state of the art of separation of cooling lubricant emissions and tests of new separation concepts for machine tools

Project No. FF-FP 0244B

Status:

completed 12/2008

Aims:

Evaluation of the performance of different separator systems under industrial cutting conditions. Exploitation of the results for further develoment.

Activities/Methods:

Machining tests under industrial conditions with mechanical, electrostatic and centrifugal separators in turning, milling and grinding, using emulsion, oil and MQL.

Results:

The project dealt with basic research on the influence of the processing and cutting technique, and the cooling lubricant medium on the cooling lubricants emissions during the metal cutting process. State-of-the-art of different separator systems for the gathering emissions at machine tools was collected. The analyses of the cooling lubricant emissions took place in a special section of measurement in front and behind the separator. The concentrations of cooling lubricant aerosols and vapours, the amount of organic carbon and the size and numbers of particles were measured. The gained data and knowledge were used to establish a test bench at the BGIA - Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance. The test bench now offers the opportunity for manufacturers of separator systems, to test and certify their separators under disinterested and reproducible conditions.
