The chemical synthesis of fibers with different defined diameter will for the first time allow the targeted investigation of toxic and inflammatory fiber properties in the cell culture model and enable conclusions that will facilitate the toxicological and occupational health risk assessment of inorganic fibers. Comparative investigations should show whether thin fibers with a strongly needle-shaped character and high rigidity promote the inflammatory effect of the fibers with an otherwise constant chemical composition.
Mineral fibers with defined lengths and diameters will be prepared, physico-chemically analyzed, and compared with respect to their inflammatory actions in established in-vitro models and gene expression assays. These studies aim to improve the toxicological assessment of defined mineral fibers in in cell cultures and by different gene expression assays.
