Risk groups of schoolchildren involved in road traffic accidents as well as priority topics for road safety education in schools are identified (milestone (MS) 1).
An overview of current school prevention work on the topic of road safety will be provided. Measures and strategies are identified and documented by means of a form to be developed in the course of the project. Structural conditions at the level of educational administration and organisation are explicitly taken into account (MS 2).
An overview of quality criteria for the evaluation of prevention measures and target-oriented structural conditions in the field of road safety in educational institutions will be developed (MS 3).
The catalogue of criteria developed as MS 3 is used to evaluate the measures/structural conditions compiled in MS 2 and to identify potentials for optimisation in the implementation of measures (MS 4).
Workpackage (WP) 1: A literature review was conducted and mobility and accident data were analysed to identify risk groups of pupils involved in road traffic accidents. In this context, children of primary school age as pedestrians, secondary school students as cyclists, and adolescents and young adults using motorized vehicles were identified as risk groups.
WP 1: The literature on traffic education at the primary school level mainly deals with safety aspects, including the health of the pupils. Only a few sources can be found for the secondary school level. In the curricula of the primary school level, mainly references to safety education were found (safety on the way to school as pedestrians, bicycle training). For the secondary school level, a holistic view of mobility, including the inclusion of environmental and climate aspects, is increasingly sought.
WP 2: In order to develop a systematic overview of the current prevention work in schools on the topic of road safety, several hundred mobility and road safety education (MoVe) measures were compiled, reviewed and roughly evaluated. Secondly, a wide range of topics, including obstacles to the implementation of measures and supportive structures, were identified in 68 guideline interviews with experts in school-based prevention work.
WP 3: A catalogue of 20 quality criteria for the evaluation of prevention measures and structural conditions in the field of road safety in educational institutions was developed by means of literature analyses, expert interviews and a review of existing criteria catalogues.
WP 4: By applying the catalogue of quality criteria developed in WP 3 to 20 MoVe measures documented in WP 2, the potential of the criteria catalogue for the quality assessment of school-based prevention measures was demonstrated.
The findings of FP 448 can be implemented by German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) in a variety of practical ways:
education, science
Type of hazard:questions beyond hazard-related issues
Catchwords:traffic accidents, education, economy and effectiveness of prevention
Description, key words:road safety, educational institutions
