Estimation on the diagnostic value of physical properties of endogenously generated exhaled aerosols in occupational lung disease

Project No. FF-FP 0370

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

Generation of a first set of data using subject groups with different diseases and correlation of physical aerosol data with established diagnostic parameters (lung function, parameters from imaging procedures, other clinical data) to estimate the diagnostic suitability of endogenously generated exhaled aerosols for early detection (secondary prevention) and follow up (secondary and tertiary prevention) in occupational lung disease in cooperation with the Institute for Prevention and Occupational Medicine of the German Social Accident lnsurance (IPA)

Activities/Methods:

Development of a novel method for time- and size-resolved characterization of endogenously generated exhaled aerosols. ldentification of an easily measurable biomarker for early detection of lung disease, based on physical properties of exhaled breath aerosols. Conduction of clinical trials to assess the sensitivity of this novel, particle-based pulmonary diagnostic technique to conventional methods of lung function analysis.
