Design and development of a prototype of a central active laser guard for industrial remote high-power laser systems

Project No. FF-FP 0331

Status:

completed 05/2017

Aims:

The aim of this research project is to realize an innovative laser safety system, which provides improved safety, economic benefit and safe handling.

Activities/Methods:

Therefore a functional model of a central active laser safety unit was created. It is based on optical monitoring of the process area by the aid of one or two cameras. After a detailed test the system was adapted to an industrial laser system with fixed and deflection optics. With all three systems examinations concerning necessary components, software functionality and needful parameter settings were executed.

Results:

Based on the findings, a specification was formulated for the establishment of an equivalent system with a functional safety of performance level c by an external company. This development was monitored until the system was implemented into the industrial laser system and tested. Thus, a central active laser safety unit with an architecture, which meets the aspects of functional safety, is now available.
