Gypsum from flue gas desulphurization plants

Aims:

Gypsum and gypsum products obtained by the desulphurization of flue gases are increasingly being employed in the construction sector. The project considers the extent to which such gypsum is contaminated by hazardous substances, and whether health hazards may consequently arise when these materials are handled.

Activities/Methods:

Initiated by the institution for statutory accident insurance and prevention in the building trade in Frankfurt the first stage of the project involved evaluation and classification of the existing literature. A further purpose of the literature survey was to allow specification of a range of potential hazards. Chemical research was to follow in a second stage if appropriate.

Results:

Evaluation of the existing data (literature survey) revealed that violations of the limit values need not be anticipated during the handling of gypsum obtained from flue gas desulphurization plant. The contamination by toxic and carcinogenic substances of the gypsum obtained from such sources is generally so low that in many cases, chemical analyses are not required. Data on gypsum from flue gas desulphurization facilities in refuse incineration plants could not be considered in the study, however.
