Measurement procedure for 2-butanone oxim

Aims:

Up to 1 % of butanone oxime is added to laquers and wood preservers as an anti-skinning agent. The substance was classified as a category 2-carcinogenic by the Commission for the investigation of health hazards of chemical compounds in the work area (MAK-Kommission). The advisory body Toxicology of the Commission of hazardous substances (AGS) and the European Union are discussing a classification. Because of the significance of the substance a measurement procedure was evaluated by the BG Institute for Occupational Safety - BIA to enable a documentation of the state of exposure in the concerned workplaces.

Activities/Methods:

A measurement procedure was evaluated with which both individual and stationary measurements are possible. Butanone oxime is enriched with Chromosorb 106 and desorbed with methyl alcohol. The analysis is made by gaschromatography. To reduce to a minimum the cross-sensitivity to the high portion of solvents in laquers, a nitrogen-selective detector was used.The detection limit is 0,2 mg/m³ for a sampling time of two hours.

Results:

The measurement procedure is used as a standard within the measurement system for hazardous substances of the Institutions for Statutory Accident Insurance and Prevention - BGMG since August 1998 and it meets the requirements of DIN EN 482 "Workplace atmospheres - general requirements for the performance of procedures for the measurement of chemical agents".
