Respiratory muscle impairment due to Long COVID

Aims:

Long/Post-COVID-19 syndrome comprises symptoms that occur or persist for more than four and twelve weeks respectively after infection with SARS-CoV-2. The prevalence of symptoms varies in the literature caused by the heterogeneity of the studies. Common symptoms include fatigue, reduced performance and activity, headaches, muscle and joint pain, smell and taste disorders and dyspnea.

Content of the feasibility study is to investigate respiratory muscle dysfunction as a possible cause of persistent dyspnea in people with Long/Post-COVID-19 syndrome.

Activities/Methods:

To test whether appropriate collectives can be recruited and specific diagnostic methods can be established. The study population comprises subjects after mild COVID-19 disease without hospitalization, moderate disease with hospitalization, severe disease requiring intermittent oxygen therapy and critical disease requiring invasive ventilation or ECMO. Recruitment will be carried out in collaboration with the Neurology Department of Bergmannsheil Hospital in Bochum and external pneumology facilities.
