The optimisation of industrial safety helmets taking into consideration improvements in fit and design

Project No. FFFF 0110

Status:

completed 01/1996

Aims:

Existing low level of acceptance of the safety helmet is based amongst other things on a lack of comfort and unbecoming appearance. Goal: constructive improvement of the safety helmet to increase comfort when worn and improve appearance.

Activities/Methods:

Survey; functional analysis (accidents with head injuries); estimate analysis of comfort when worn; production of a performance specification; discussion of the new concept; incorporation of norms and test criteria; model manufacture; model testing; small-series production; presentation and surveys

Results:

Description, analysis and evaluation of the standard of technology in the construction of safety helmets; elaboration and documentation of the acceptance factors for wear and their connections; integral requirements list (safety, comfort, functionality, emotional effect); model in accordance with a design- and function-orientated concept on the basis of determined deficits with the following particular features: improvement amongst other things in overhead vision, improvement in the fit (hold also without chin straps), optimised transfer and distribution of force via interior construction, improved damping of lateral impact, integration/ability to integrate further PPE-modules (safety mask, ear protection, breathing equipment)
