This project aims to clarify whether the use of a rehabilitation glove which can be used to control games on a PC using finger and hand movements (gamification) improves hand function during a four-week inpatient rehabilitation. The primary goal is the improvement measured with the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Secondary goals are improvement of hand strength and mobility, reduction of pain (measured with PainDetect), increased training motivation/more training fun and last but not least the usability of the game modules.


First, the patients in hand rehabilitation are screened for the inclusion/exclusion criteria.

Diagnosis and main inclusion criteria:

  • Patients after a hand injury who start with inpatient hand rehabilitation
  • Patients with a minimum age of 18 years
  • Sufficient communication and cognitive skills to participate in therapy and to understand instructions and questionnaires; this is based on a clinical decision by the recruiting therapist.

Exclusion criteria:

  • Patients with acute Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) or patients who cannot wear the glove without pain.
  • Manifest mental disorders (e.g. post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorder)
  • Visual restrictions that affect trouble-free viewing of a laptop; this is based on a clinical decision by the recruiting therapist.

After written consent patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups (control group and experimental group). In the control group, the patients complete the in-house hand rehabilitation as normal, but are also given a finger expander and instructions for various exercises to train manual skills. Exercises can be carried out independently after the regular therapies. Patients are instructed in these exercises beforehand by the therapists.

Patients in the experimental group also complete the hand rehabilitation but are also given a rehabilitation glove and a laptop. You can play various games on it which are controlled by hand- and finger movements. These games should also be carried out independently and are explained beforehand by the therapists.

All participating patients are instructed to practice at least once a day, but they are free to choose when and how often. The software of the rehabilitation glove records which games have been played, how often and for how long. Within the control group, patients should independently document on a pre-prepared document how often and how long they have been doing their exercises.

Before the first therapy units, patients are given questionnaires (PainDetect, DASH Score; SF36) and a demographic form. In addition, the therapists carry out an objective examination of the hand function using the neutral zero method. A weekly follow-up is carried out during inpatient hand rehabilitation. The final examination is carried out after the four weeks.
