June 2012

  • Traineeships are a popular way of gathering initial work experience. But in times of economic crisis and flagging job markets, they are also frequently the only avenue open to young people seeking their first job. The problem is that the quality of traineeships is poor in a lot of cases and the number of complaints in Europe is mounting. In response, the European Commission has decided to present a quality framework for traineeships in 2012, with the aim of having it adopted as a Council Recommendation by the end of the year.
  • VAT reform: The debate on the need to modernise and simplify the VAT system has been going on for some time in the European Union. The latest initiatives by the European Commission show that it is seeking comprehensive changes, including the abolition of tax exemptions for social security activities, albeit as part of a gradual process. The issue has come to the fore because a reformed VAT system could provide the extra income required to consolidate national budgets.

June 2014 - Europe Special Issue

  • The fifth round of negotiations between the United States of America and the European Union on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) was concluded in Washington on 23 May. Despite envisaging possible risks, the DGUV particularly sees the TTIP as an opportunity to improve occupational safety and health throughout the world, and to strengthen economic development overall.
  • On 14 January, the European Parliament adopted with a clear majority an own-initiative report on effective labour inspections as a strategy for improving working conditions in Europe. The European Commission has now also launched an initiative.
  • On 2 October 2013, the European Commission published a communication on the Regulatory Fitness and Performance Programme (REFIT). DGUV Kompakt discussed the subject of “REFIT” with Laurent Vogel of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) and Rebekah Smith of BUSINESSEUROPE, the European employers’ association.
