The DGUV cooperates with numerous national and international institutions in enhancing social security and work safety standards throughout the world. The DGUV offers advice to various governments on creating and reforming their accident insurance systems. Through its cooperation with the Ministry of Labour of the People’s Republic of China the DGUV is advising the largest statutory accident system in the world. Most recently, the DGUV is also providing assistance to accident insurance in Colombia.

Among the most prominent international cooperation partners of the DGUV are the International Labour Organization (ILO) () and the International Social Security Association (ISSA) ().

Within the ISSA Technical Commission on Insurance against Employment Accidents and Occupational Diseases (), the DGUV promotes the global exchange of good practices among systems for insurance against occupational accidents and diseases. The beneficiaries are German companies active internationally and their employees, and companies and employees in developing and emerging countries.

In the European Forum of Insurances against Accidents at Work and Occupational Diseases (FORUM) (), the DGUV has joined together with numerous European national umbrella associations to promote the concept of insurance against occupational accidents and diseases throughout Europe.
