Development of a procedure for measurement of Kathon CG

Project No. BIA 2044

Status:

completed 08/2003

Aims:

The preservative Kathon CG is widely used in water-based systems (e.g. cooling lubricants, printer's inks, water-based glues and photographic solutions). Kathon is subject (as of 2001) to an atmospheric limit value of 0.05 mg/m³. Up until now, no measurement procedure for kathon CG was available which met the requirements of DIN EN 482, "General requirements for the performance of procedures for the measurement of chemical agents".

Activities/Methods:

A capillary electrophoretic measurement procedure for Kathon was to be developed. Suitable separation conditions had first be defined. A measurement procedure was then to be drawn up in accordance with DIN EN 482. Sampling was to be performed by GSP, onto a suitable filter material. Measurements were to be performed under practical conditions in order to test the procedure for its suitability for use in the BGMG hazardous substance measurements system. Finally, the method was to be introduced in the BGMG system as a standard method.

Results:

A capillary electrophoretic measurement method was developed for Kathon. The first stage entailed the definition of suitable conditions for separation and determination of kathons (5-chloro-2-methyl-3-isothiazolone, 2-methyl-3-isothiazolone, 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one, 1,2-benzoisothiazol-3(2H)-one) in dilute solution. This method is already being employed as a routine procedure within the BGMG hazardous substances measurement system. Aqueous absorption solutions in type B 70 absorption bottles were employed for the obtaining of air samples. The measurement method does not satisfy the requirements for measurement methods specified in DIN EN 482 and for standard methods within the BGMG. It is suitable only for preliminary measurements, and may be employed for this purpose within the BGMG.
