Protective clothing and protective gloves against chemical risks

Project No. BIA 1044

Status:

completed 08/1996

Aims:

Not every material for protective equipment protects against every chemical. Each chemical substance calls for a special barrier material. The aim of the project was to develop a practical test method and choose suitable test chemicals (standardized test battery) to determine the resistance to chemicals of materials used for protective clothing and gloves.

Activities/Methods:

The project implementation comprised three steps: Literature search for test methods and lists of the chemical resistance of materials for chemical protective clothing and gloves, Selection of suitable test methods and test chemicals, Permeation tests with different chemical/material combinations.

Results:

The results of the project are considered in the revisions of the European standards for permeation testing DIN EN 374-3 "Protective gloves against chemicals and micro-organisms - Part 3: Determination of the resistance against permeation of chemicals" and EN 369 "Protective clothing - Protection against liquid chemicals - test methods: Resistance of materials against the permeation of liquids". There should be one harmonised list of test chemicals in the standards to ease comparison between different types of chemical protective clothing and gloves and their performance.
