TAQP strategies for the integration of the preventive industrial safety

Project-Nr. IAG480049

Status:

ongoing 06/2008

Aims:

Fraport AG has approximately 13,000 employees. Airline passengers in Frankfurt in 2007 numbered 54 million and rising. Present observations suggest that passenger air traffic will increase by five percent year on year up to 2022 (according to the 2004 report on air traffic). This development in the volume of air traffic will require a further increase in the effectiveness and management of flight logistics. In addition, larger aircraft such as the Airbus A380 are being used, which in turn place additional demands upon airport operators.
Enterprises are responding to the target of greater productivity with innovations by which they aim to improve their market position and competitiveness. A crucial requirement in this context is for the company's existing potential to be exploited such that the process of innovation runs smoothly and can be implemented for maximum attainment of the targets. As part of innovation management, the introduction of new technologies is an essential condition, but is not itself sufficient. Rather, this process encompasses the entire value chain, from work organization, work process planning and personnel development, up to and including the preventive design of the new work systems. In consideration of the rising average age of Fraport AG's employees, which is currently around 42 years in the operative areas, and the resulting age mix of the workforce, the health of employees constitutes a decisive, key factor in the company's capacity for sustainable innovation.

Activities/Methods:

An essential criterion is the assurance of broad acceptance by all parties within the company, by virtue of their inclusion in the process of innovation from the outset. The approach followed in the project was therefore geared to the potential.

During the project, two key issues were examined which may influence the course of the innovation process and which are relevant to the interaction of innovations and prevention:

- How can prevention be integrated systematically into process design during the introduction of new, innovative technical systems and the reorganization of work processes in mixed-age and mixed-sex workforces?
- What contribution can be made by prevention during the design of new work systems, in order for increased productivity and health to be linked strategically, and in consequence, in order to increase the willingness of companies with mixed-age and mixed-sex workforces to innovate?

The project is to be evaluated comprehensively on the levels of processes and effects. Prevention products suitable for transfer are to be developed which are also suitable for adaptation by small and medium-sized enterprises.
