Lifting and carrying, activities performed in a kneeling position and with constrained posture in the interior decoration trade

Interior decorators are exposed to work-related health hazards to the musculoskeletal system during the laying of carpets and other floor coverings, sewing and dressing of curtains, the upholstering of bulky sofas and chairs, during tasks performed in a kneeling position, constrained postures, and the manual handling of loads. In order for complaints or diseases to be prevented from arising as a result, the trade businesses, which are frequently small and medium-sized enterprises, require practical assistance. In response to an initiative by the Berufsgenossenschaft der Lederindustrie - LiBG and based upon a study conducted by B·A·D Gesundheitsvorsorge und Sicherheitstechnik, the IFA developed materials with which the companies can conduct risk assessments specific to their own sector. At the same time, concrete proposals were developed for ergonomic design of the work and for dedicated prevention approaches. A catalogue of exercises for behavioural prevention contains exercises for strengthening and stretching of the muscles in various regions of the body. It is geared to the particular training needs of interior decorators, and with its modular structure, can be adjusted to the needs of individuals according to their daily stress exposure.
