Harmonised standards relating to Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
Presumption of conformity for EN 954-1 still applicable
29-Dec-2009
On 29 December 2009, when application of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC became compulsory, an updated list of the harmonised standards relating to the Directive was published in EU Official Journal C 321. The list published in EU Official Journal C 309 on 18 December 2009 did not yet include the fact that the presumption of conformity for EN 954-1:1996 had been extended until 31 December 2011.
The harmonised standards play a particularly important role for machinery manufacturers. If a manufacturer designs and produces a machine in accordance with Annex IV of the EC Machinery Directive, the manufacturer must then commission the services of a notified testing and certification body. In future, this will no longer be required if harmo-nised standards exist for the machine in question and the standards are complied with. Consequently, such manufac-turers will no longer have to have an EC type examination conducted or implement a full quality assurance system.
