Revised version of the Directive on Marine Equipment (2009/26/EC)

EC Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment has been in force since 20 December 1996. It was last amended in 2008 through "Commission Directive 2008/67/EC of 30 June 2008 amending Council Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment", application of which is compulsory with effect from 21 July 2009.

On 6 May 2009, a further amendment of the Directive on Marine Equipment was published in the EU Official Journal L 113. Application of this Directive 2009/26/EC is compulsory with effect from 6 April 2010.

These changes were necessary because further international agreements and test standards had come into force since the last amendment, which had to be incorporated into the Directive on Marine Equipment.

The above-mentioned legislation provides the basis for assessing the conformity of marine equipment. The aim is to ensure both free movement of marine equipment and compliance with a high level of safety within the European Community.
