Sports accidents
One sports accident in two occurs during ball games of various types. These are followed, by a wide margin, by gymnastics (on apparatus and mats), track and field athletics, play on playground apparatus, running games, and winter and water sports. Some three-quarters of school sports accidents occur in gymnasiums and on the playing-field. Altogether, around 80% of sports accidents occur during ball games, gymnastics, and track and field athletics.

Accidents during breaks
The school playground is the main site of accidents occurring during breaks, accounting for approximately two-thirds of such accidents. The remaining accidents occur primarily in the classroom, on steps within the school building, and in corridors. In the majority of cases, schoolchildren suffered injury when falling during running, chasing and playing catching games. 13% of the accidents occurring during breaks are a result of fights and scraps.

Accidents during lessons
48% of accidents during lessons occur in day-care facilities. These are followed by general lessons and technical/craft lessons. Day-care facilities, "Hauptschulen" secondary schools and primary schools, comprehensive and grammar schools, "Realschulen" secondary schools and vocational schools are affected, in that order In the majority of cases, the accidents occurring in general lessons are knock and bump accidents and falls, whereas the injuries in technical and craft lessons are by the nature of the lessons associated with the use of hand tools and machines.
